After more than a month on administrative leave, the principal of Chatfield High School informed the community this week that he was stepping down.
Jeffco Public Schools spokeswoman Tammy Schiff confirmed Tuesday that Principal Chad Broer resigned his position.
Broer and Craig Aukland, the school’s athletic director, were placed on leave in August as the district investigated allegations school officials failed to follow safety protocols.
Aukland is facing a misdemeanor charge of failure to report child abuse or neglect. In his position, Aukland is a mandatory reporter of child abuse or neglect under state law.
Because the case involves juveniles, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office made few details public. However, students were disciplined in connection with the situation.
Jim Ellis has been serving as interim principal during the investigation. Ellis previously served as principal at Chatfield High School from 1999 to 2004 and later retired.
Aukland remains on administrative leave and is scheduled for a court appearance on Oct. 29.
