Nadine Dorries Reveals Why She Decided To Step Down With 'Immediate Effect'

Tory MPs are speculating that Nadine Dorries is planning “one last curtain call in the Commons” with a tell-all speech in defence of Boris Johnson on Monday.

With many Conservative MPs expected to stay away from the debate, the former Culture Secretary and close ally of Mr Johnson is tipped to be present and “unleash hell” on the former Prime Minister’s detractors.

One Tory backbencher told Express.co.uk: “Some of us think she has decided to delay leaving so she can speak in the debate.

“It’s going to be uncomfortable for a lot of people because there will be no real restrictions on what she can say.

“She will be protected by Parliamentary privilege so she can make a number of accusations about current ministers, perhaps most of all the Prime Minister without any legal comeback.”

Another MP speculated: “This could be Nadine’s final curtain call in the Commons.

“I can’t imagine we will see much more of her here but it should be spectacular.”

The speculation comes amid continued confusion over Ms Dorries’s plans after her successor as the Tory candidate for Mid Bedfordshire was selected last night.

Last Friday she said she was resigning “with immediate effect”, however, she still has not officially quit as an MP.

The new Conservative Mid-Bedfordshire candidate is Festus Akinbusoye, the police and crime commissioner for the country.

Ms Dorries, herself, endorsed her successor last night tweeting: “My family and I are thrilled that our great friend ⁦@Fest4BedsPCC was selected tonight to become the next MP for Mid Bedfordshire.

“He is one of the best people I know. Genuine, principled with a track record of delivery. He will make an amazing MP. Congratulations Festus!”

Mr Akinbusoye though could be preparing to stand in a by-election after the summer when Ms Dorries finally decides to quit.

Conservative Party chairman Greg Hands is already planning two by-election campaigns in Boris Johnson’s old seat of Uxbridge and South Ruislip and Nigel Adams’ former Selby and Ainsty seat on July 20.

He said of Mr Akinbusoye: “He will protect the greenbelt, continue to work with police to cut crime and stand up for the local community.

“Looking forward to joining him again soon on the campaign!”
