Kim Leadbeater, MP for Batley and Spen, told James O’Brien’s ‘Full Disclosure’ LBC podcast how the language used by Ms Rayner must not be tolerated and the culture of toxicity removed from the public debate during a discussion on the safety of politicians following the murder of Conservative MP Sir David Amess. Ms Leadbeater shared her views on the issue as the sister of Jo Cox, the Labour MP murdered by a right-wing extremist in 2016.

Ms Leadbeater said: “In terms of the discourse for the record I think Angela got that wrong.

“I just don’t think she should have said that.”

She went on to highlight how the Labour Party “can’t complain about the issue of toxicity in public life and then behave that way ourselves” as she set about a frank takedown of the Deputy Labour leader.

Ms Leadbetter warned “we have got to be really, really careful” but acknowledged “it is hard” when a politician feels so passionately about their cause.

She said: “Angela Rayner is a very passionate, feisty, northern women!

“I understand where that anger comes from, I understand where that frustration comes from.

“But as soon as we go to that level we are not helping and I do feel clearly about that.”

The Labour MP concluded: “That culture has to change.”

Angela Rayner brutally shamed for 'Tory Scum' attack

The brutal takedown by Ms Leadbeater follows Ms Rayner’s comments where she slammed Mr Johnson at a fringe event at her party’s conference back in September.

Speaking at the event, Ms Rayner said: “We cannot get any worse than a bunch of scum, homophobic…

“Racist, misogynistic, absolute vile, banana republic, vile, nasty, Etonian … piece of scum.”

She added that she had “held back a little” with the comments which sparked furious calls for her to apologise.

At the time she said that would only happen when Mr Johnson apologises for comments made about LGBTQ+ and BAME communities.

Ms Rayner was accused by Sarah Atherton, Conservative MP for Wrexham that she “fuelled online abuse” and “normalised harassment” when she made the comments.
