Speaking on ITV’s Peston the former Scottish Conservative leader said it was true that people cared more about their own lives than those of politicians. However, she also pointed out that the parties at Downing Street held during lockdown did impact people’s lives directly due to the difficult decisions and severe restrictions they were living under at the time.

She said: “The idea is absolutely fanciful that people don’t care about this.

“People do care more about their own lives and the challenges in their own lives than they care about politicians’ lives and what happens behind closed doors in Downing Street.

“But this is exactly about their lives because it’s what they gave up because they were doing the right thing.”

Ms Davidson went on to highlight what people had given up and sacrificed during lockdown.

She said: “They didn’t go and visit their Mum in the care home.

“They didn’t go and sit by a dying friend or loved one.

“They didn’t get to go to a funeral of someone they’ve known their whole life and people feel guilty that they didn’t do those things. They didn’t do it for the right reasons.

“Now they see what they think is the Prime Minister and the people around him laughing at them and breaking the rules willy-nilly.

“Wondering about the decisions they made that they will have to live with for the rest of their lives.”

Ms Davidson concluded by pointing out that Downing Street had failed to understand the depth of public feeling on this issue.

She said: “I think that’s where Downing Street doesn’t understand this isn’t something you can time out.

“Kick the can down the road and people forget about it.
