Brexit: UK should 'behave like our country's size' says Adonis

Britain left the EU in January 2020, more than three years after the Brexit vote of 2016. However pro-EU campaigners are already pushing for Britain to reapply for membership of the bloc.

Lord Adonis, a former minister under Tony Blair and Gordon Brown, leads the European Movement UK.

He has openly called for Brexit to be reversed with Britain once again surrendering sovereignty to Brussels.

Speaking to Patrick Christys on talkRADIO Lord Adonis branded the current situation “very grim”.

He commented: “Our trade with the EU has fallen much more than the rest of the world, that’s the Brexit effect.

“The situation is very grim. I want nothing but good for this country.

“That’s why I’ve always wanted us to lead, not leave, Europe.

“That’s still my view. Gordon Brown says the slogan we should have fought for over the last five years was to lead, not leave.”

Rejoin EU, a new political party demanding Britain re-apply for membership of the bloc, stood in this week’s Chesham and Amersham by-election.

The party finished last with just 101 votes, or 0.3 percent of votes cast.

Sarah Green of the Liberal Democrats won the seat, which had previously been a Tory stronghold.

Any country applying for EU membership must commit to join the borderless Schengen Area, and adopt the Euro as its currency.

This means that, if Britain re-joins the bloc, it is likely to have even less sovereignty than during its first membership.

The UK would also likely be without the British rebate, a financial settlement negotiated by Margaret Thatcher which reduced the UK’s net payment to the bloc.

In April Lord Adonis used his Twitter account to explicitly call for Britain to re-establish EU membership.

He tweeted: “It is my view that Britain should rejoin the European Union as soon as possible.

“Everything that has happened since the 2016 referendum has reinforced this view, including the pandemic.

“Our prosperity and security simply cannot be divorced from the rest of the Europe.”

In May Labour lost Hartlepool, previously a stronghold, to the Tories in a by-election.

Hartlepool voted strongly in favour of Brexit during the 2016 referendum.

This repeated Conservative electoral triumphs in 2019, when the party captures a swath of working-class ‘red wall’ seats from Labour in the north and midlands.

Labour went into the 2019 general election promising a second referendum on Britain’s EU membership.
