Former Senior Director for Europe and Russia at the United States National Security Council Fion Hill sat down on BBC’s Newsnight to discuss Russia’s growing threat on Ukraine and what this means for the international community. Ms Hill warned other European countries about Putin’s actions “what is to stop other countries from doing this to their neighbour”. Vladimir Putin currently has around 100,000 troops lined up at the border of Ukraine but the Russian President has denied having strategies in place to invade. Ms Hill discussed the threat of Russia sparking a third world war with other countries, as support for Ukraine has come in from the UK and US.

Ms Hill said: “Well, look it’s the larger assessment that everybody has had about the state of affairs.

“Ukraine is not a member of NATO, however, it is a member of the United Nations International system.

“And, again the point being here putting aside previous Presidents and things we could’ve done before.

“Here and now Ukraine is an independent sovereign country that has been attacked by an outside aggressor.

Ms Hill added: “And this should be of great concern to every country internationally.

“Because if Russia can do this to Ukraine.

“What is to stop other countries from doing this to neighbours, while laying claims?

“This is exactly what we fought two world wars against, World War One and World War Two.

Ms Hill added: “Which had a whole system in place that is supposed to be pushing back against this.

“So this is a much bigger challenge, it’s not just Ukraine and not just NATO.

“Not just some spat between the US and Russia, this is really one of those game-changers internationally.”

Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s official spokesman said: “There is a small infantry training team deploying to assist the Ukrainian armed forces to become familiar with the defensive systems we are providing and ensure they are able to use them as soon as possible.

“Operation Orbital, our training deployment in Ukraine, has a routine commitment of around 100 personnel, that will fluctuate depending on the type of training taking place.”

Liz Truss Foreign Secretary spoke of the threat from Russia on Ukraine when she addressed a G7 meeting.

Ms Truss said: ” “We are very clear, together with our allies in the G7, with our allies in Nato, that if there is an incursion by Russia into Ukraine, it would come at a massive cost.
