Balaclava gunman, hail of bullets and mystery Audi – final moments of shot girl

Police are desperately hunting the killer of Olivia Pratt-Korbel, the innocent victim of a gangland shooting in in the Knotty Ash area of Liverpool.

Olivia was left to die by the callous driver of a black Audi who arrived moments after the shooting to take the target of the attack to hospital, but left the nine-year-old bleeding to death in the hallway.

The gunman's target was a 35-year-old man whose name has not been released and who Cheryl and Olivia did not know.

Olivia’s mum Cheryl had opened her front door to find out what was causing the commotion outside her house on Monday evening.

As she did so a stranger burst into the house in a bid to escape a pursuing gunman who was wearing a ski mask and a black padded jacket. The masked man fired a number of shots “indiscriminately”, hitting not only his intended victim but Olivia and her mum.

One bullet struck Cheryl in the wrist and carried on to hit Olivia in the chest, causing fatal injuries.

Detective Chief Superintendent Mark Kameen told a press conference today: "Despite those horrific circumstances, the attacker has continued the assault, and has continued to try and gain entry to the property.

“In doing so he has fired two further shots at the 35-year-old man who at this point is inside Cheryl and Olivia's home address. The attacker has then left the front door and has made off on foot."

Shortly after the shooting, police officers arrived scene and rushed Olivia to Alder Hey before North West Ambulance Service took her mum to Aintree Hospital, the Liverpool Echo reports.

DCS Kameen said the wounded 35-year-old was undergoing surgery this morning and has yet to be spoken to formally.

The Audi has since been seized and police are looking to identify the gunman who was wearing a black padded jacket, gloves and a balaclava as well as another man who was seen running down nearby Kingsheath Avenue.

Assistant Chief Constable Jenny Sims said: "This is a truly shocking incident in which tragically a young and innocent girl has been shot and sadly died.

"Our thoughts and condolences go to her family and friends at this very difficult time.

"No parent should ever have to suffer the loss of a child in these dreadful circumstances.

"This crime is abhorrent and our communities must come forward and tell us who is responsible.

"This cowardly individual does not deserve to be walking the streets and I would urge those who know anything to speak to us and tell us what they know so that we can put the person responsible behind bars where they belong."

At the press conference, DCS Kameen spoke directly to the killer. He said: "My appeal is to the person responsible for this attack on this nine-year-old schoolgirl to recognise the pain and anguish that this has caused her family. I want that individual to hand themselves in.

Meanwhile Merseyside Police say they are following up on multiple lines of enquiry after 28-year-old Ashley Dale was shot and killed in the early hours of Sunday morning in what is believed to have been a case of mistaken identity.

They are also still searching for two suspects who fled on electric bikes following the fatal shooting of 22-year-old Sam Rimmer late on Tuesday, August 16.

Reacting to the latest killing, Liverpool Wavertree Labour MP Paula Barker told BBC Breakfast: "It is obviously devastating and it comes 15 years to the day after Rhys Jones was senselessly murdered on the streets of our city as well. It is completely unacceptable and this mindless violence simply has to stop”.
