Brutal dad beats gay son, 6, after he spotted him sitting on another boys lap

A homophobic father beat up his six-year-old son for sitting on another boy's lap while shouting "being gay is wrong".

The brutal attack took place before the thug battered the child's mother.

The 28-year-old father-of-three from North Queensland, Australia yelled "if they were adults I would have killed them" during the attack.

He is said to have burst into the violent rage when he thought the children were having "sexual engagement".

The landscape gardener's defence barrister, Scott McLennan, said when he saw his son sitting on another boy's lap it "triggered something in him, he wasn't able to cope with it", reports The Courier Mail.

The father repeatedly struck his eldest son, before throwing him to the ground in fury, leaving him bruised and terrified, Mackay District Court heard.

He later told police: "It's hard to explain it, I caught my boy sitting on another boy's lap, this is the saddest thing I've ever seen in my life.

"I'm a piece of s***. I shouldn't have put my hands on my kid, but a matter of fact I have."

When the boy's mother ran in to shield their infant daughter, he also attacked her by pinning her to the wall and choking her until she was unconscious.

"You better f***me after this," the man told her before she passed out, the court heard.

When she regained consciousness, he apologised to her, only to slap her again while she tried to comfort their infant daughter.

The man, who can't be named for legal reasons, shouted that they were "all trying to send him to jail", said Crown prosecutor Samantha O'Rourke.

The prolonged attack lasted several days until he was arrested and remanded in custody in August 2020 following a welfare visit on the family.

The court heard that while in custody, he tried to persuade the boy's mother to drop the charges or "he would miss out on the children's lives".

He also ignored police protection and domestic violence orders and continued to contact the mother throughout September and October.

He was charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm, choking, attempting to pervert justice, and five counts each of common assault, contravening a domestic violence order and police protection orders.

He pleaded guilty to all offences at Mackay District Court on Monday and was jailed for three years by Judge Tony Moynihan, but has already spent over a year in custody on remand.

His parole hearing will be held on 18 December.
