Cameron: UK will back Ukraine for as long as it takes

In his first overseas trip since his surprise return to the Government, Lord Cameron was met in Kyiv by President Volodymyr Zelensky, who posted a clip on social media.

Lord Cameron can be heard saying: “I wanted this to be my first visit.”

“What I want to say by being here is that we will continue to give you the moral support, the diplomatic support and the economic support and, above all, the military support that you need – not just this year and next year, but however long as it takes.”

President Zelensky congratulated Lord Cameron on his new job and thanked him for visiting his country first – but warned the Middle East crisis is taking the focus away from the Russian invasion.

He said: “We are grateful for the unwavering support of Ukraine from the United Kingdom. We are grateful for the warm welcome of Ukrainian citizens in the UK. And we are glad that you came to Ukraine.”

Alluding to the Middle East crisis, he added: “The world is not so focused on the battlefield situation in Ukraine, and this dividing of the focus really does not help.”

Lord Cameron said the UK must work with allies to ensure Ukraine gets “attention. He also told the President: “I’ve had some disagreements with Boris Johnson…but his support for you was the finest thing he and his government did.”

A report out yesterday found Russia “pre-planned” a “grand theft” of Ukraine grain worth $1billion a year to fund its war effort.
