Cody Rhodes linked with sensational return to WWE after exit from AEW

Cody Rhodes is being linked with an astonishing return to WWE – after leaving rival wrestling company All Elite Wrestling.

Rhodes, a former Intercontinental Champion in Vince McMahon’s company, was a driving force behind the formation of AEW in 2019.

This came after the 36-year-old had ended a ten-year stint with WWE, where he’d been a consistent, regular performer without truly nailing a main event spot.

The launch of AEW was seen as the first genuine competition to the sports entertainment juggernaut for decades, with Rhodes among the founding Executive Vice Presidents working with Owner Tony Khan.

He was instrumental in AEW’s early success and enjoyed notable feuds with the likes of Chris Jericho, MJF and Darby Allin – as well as a long reign as TNT Champion.

Rhodes was in the midst of a third reign with that title as recently as January of this year before dropping the gold to Sammy Guevara at Beach Break.

Now it appears his time with AEW is done. Fightful in the US reported that Rhodes and wife Brandi had left the company having been unable to nail down a new contract.

Perhaps the biggest news to emerge is that Rhodes could be on his way back to WWE in what would rank as one of the most significant moves in recent wrestling history.

Fightful went as far as to state that initial 'discussions' had taken place, saying : “WWE officials were aware of the situation and also knew that an announcement would be dropped [on his AEW departure].

“We've heard that the two sides have at the least had discussions, but WWE was well aware that an announcement regarding Rhodes' departure would be made.”

Neither Rhodes nor WWE have commented on the speculation, but AEW chief Khan posted an emotional tribute to the grappler in confirming his departure from the company.

“Cody and Brandi Rhodes were integral to the launch of All Elite Wrestling,” it read.

“Cody’s ability combined with his boldness and his passion for our industry and his love for our community outreach helped AEW deliver on our mission to give fans what they needed for far too long – something new, innovative and lasting.”

It went on to add: “I have immense respect and appreciation for Cody and Brandi, and I wish them both the best as they move on from AEW. Thank you Cody and Brandi!”
