The first case of the variant, named P1, was detected in Minnesota on Monday.

There are fears it may be able to partially dodge currently approved vaccines.

It is also believed to be up to 50 percent more infectious than standard coronavirus.

The Minnesota patient, a US resident, first became unwell in the first week of January.

Some 50 coronavirus samples have been sequenced by the University of Minnesota and other laboratories, a process carried out to detect new variants.
