A couple have tragically died after they lost control of their family plane and plummeted to the ground.

Robert and Sandra Denton have been described as “seasoned pilots” by their devastated family.

The pair had embarked on a 417-mile, departing from Florida, US with a final intended destination of Winder, Georgia.

Oconee County Sheriff’s Office said they lost control of the single-engine plane at around 2.30 pm and plummeted to the ground in Watkinsville – eight miles southwest of Athens.

The Cessna 177B aeroplane was destroyed upon impact, Sheriff James Hale told the Athens Banner-Herald, according to the New York Post.

The damage was said to be so extensive authorities were unable to immediately determine the type of aircraft.

Robert and Sandra’s family are devastated by the loss of the 76 and 77-year-old, who they say were “seasoned pilots”.

In a statement, the family said: “While taken from us far too soon, we find comfort knowing they were together and doing what they loved, flying.

“Robert and Sandra lived life to the fullest and were two of the most thoughtful and loving people you could know.”

They were “beloved residents” of Williamsburg and Clare, Michigan, as well as The Villages retirement community in Florida.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation, led by the National Transportation Safety Board and FAA are investigating the crash.

Earlier this month, the Daily Star reported that four people have died in a horror plane crash just off the coast of the United States.

The small plane plummeted into the ocean approximately half a mile off Venice Fishing Pier, Florida yesterday (April 5).

The force confirmed there were three passengers and the pilot onboard the aircraft – two married couples.

Pilot William Lumpkin, 64, and the other victims, Patricia Lumpkin, 68, Ricky Beaver, 60, and Elizabeth Beaver, 57.
