CSP troopers, El Paso deputies kill carjacking suspect in Monument

A Colorado State trooper and an El Paso County sheriff’s deputy fired on and killed a suspect who’d fled officers, attempted to carjack a vehicle and shot at police after entering an occupied home in Monument on Saturday evening, according to Colorado Springs police.

The incident began around 5 p.m. Saturday when Colorado State Patrol troopers responded to a menacing call involving a driver on southbound Interstate 25 near Larkspur, according to a news release from the Colorado Springs Police Department, the agency investigating the shooting by the deputy and trooper.

As troopers tried to stop the vehicle, the driver pulled off I-25 at Exit 163 and cashed into a guardrail. The suspect then attempted to carjack another vehicle, according to police, but was unable to.

The suspect pointed a gun at the troopers, according to Colorado Springs police, then fled on foot through a field. The suspect entered a nearby home in the 20000 block of Doewood Drive in Monument, police said, and the occupants were able to safely get out.

When Colorado State Patrol troopers and El Paso County sheriff’s deputies responded to the house, the suspect fired at least one round at them, according to police. One deputy and one trooper returned fire, killing the suspect.

No members of the public or law enforcement officers were injured, police said.

The suspect who was killed by police has not been identified.
