A contribution box at the Columbine Memorial in Clement Park was stolen sometime over the weekend.
Contributions placed in the box are a source of funds for the all-volunteer Columbine Memorial Foundation, which manages and maintains the site, a place for “peace, comfort and reflection,” said Kirsten Kreiling, a member of the memorial committee.
Maintenance costs at the memorial are about $15,000 annually.
“It has been an awfully tough year for fundraising,” Kreiling said. “This a big blow for us.”
The brown, metallic donation box is about 3 feet tall and 10 inches square. It has white lettering on a side spelling out ColumbineMemorial.org. It was stolen sometime between late afternoon Friday and midday Sunday. The concrete base of the box is also gone.
It appears someone “rocked” the box until the base loosened and it was hauled off entirely, said Jenny Fulton, a Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman. There are currently no leads on a suspect.
Anyone with information on the incident, or who saw something suspicious, is asked to call the sheriff’s office tip line at 303-271-5612.
Donations to the memorial foundation can me made online at www.columbinememorial.org.
