Dublin knife attacker in coma and may have permanent brain injuries

The suspect in the Dublin knife attack is in a coma and may have permanent brain damage after sustaining serious brain injuries.

Detectives probing the attack which left four members of the public, including three children, stabbed on Parnell Square East, believe the injuries sustained by the attacker might be permanent.

Investigations may hit a block should the suspect not awake from the coma, with the Force wanting to speak with the individual about his alleged part in the attack. It could be some time before this is possible though, the Irish Mirror reported.

The unnamed Algerian born suspect is currently in an induced coma in hospital after suffering serious head injuries allegedly in connection with the incident.

The suspect, in his 50s, will be questioned once he is medically fit to speak with police, though sources say it could be some time before he is ready to do so.

An unnamed source said: "He is in a bad way. His head injuries are extensive and may be permanent." A five-year-old girl stabbed several times in the incident is believed to be in a critically ill condition in Dublin's Temple Street Hospital.

Two other children, a girl aged six and a boy aged five, injured in the attack have since been discharged from hospital. The female worker who bravely put herself between the children and attacker is still in hospital.

There are hopes the unnamed adult will make a full recovery as Gardai investigators continue searching for a motive behind the horrific attacks which triggered riots and protests in the streets of Dublin.

Shop windows were shattered and a number of arrests were made at the time according to Gardai inspectors. The Daily Star reported the horror stabbings had caused unrest in the streets and protests throughout the city.

Around 60 Gardai were reportedly injured in the attacks which left "cuts, bruises and significant scrapes" on a number of active force members.
