Princess Eugenie could be seen to fight off tears as she paid tribute to Prince Philip in an unearthed documentary clip.

Eugenie – who is Prince Andrew’s younger daughter – attended a memorial to Philip that took place at Westminster Abbey yesterday.

Although Prince Harry and Meghan Markle declined to travel from the US to make an appearance, the ceremony was attended by the Queen, who was controversially accompanied by Andrew.

In one moment, Eugenie’s sister Beatrice could be seen covering her face to hide tears, and now an unearthed clip has shown that the princess had a similarly emotional reaction when she had considered the loss of her grandfather.

In early 2021, just weeks before Philip’s death on April 9 , Eugenie gave birth to a son, and in a BBC documentary, Prince Philip: The Royal Family Remembers, the princess revealed that she had paid tribute to her grandfather through her child’s name.

“We named August, August Philip because Grandpa has been such a huge inspiring character in my life.

Eugenie could then be seen to become slightly emotional, remembering: “I brought little August to come and meet him and told him that we’d named him after him.

“It was such a lovely moment. We were very lucky to do that.”

Yesterday’s memorial service, attended by 1,800 people, came after coronavirus regulations meant that only 30 mourners were able to attend Philip’s funeral in April last year.

There had been fears that the Queen would not be able to attend the service after a spate of recent health scares, and pictures showed her shedding a tear while tributes were paid to her late husband.

In February, Eugenie made an appearance alongside Harry at the Super Bowl, but the prince decided against making the reverse trip across the Atlantic, after launching a lawsuit alleging that the UK is currently unsafe for his family to visit.

The prince was criticised by some for his decision, with polarising TV host Piers Morgan labelling the ex-royal “shameful” for remaining in California.
