Fire shuts down I-70 in Glenwood Canyon in western Colorado

A wildfire burning east of Glenwood Springs has closed Interstate 70 through Glenwood Canyon.

The Grizzly Creek Fire had burned about 750 acres as of 4 p.m. Monday, said Larry Helmerick with the Rocky Mountain Area Coordination Center, a regional firefighting task force.

Firefighters are on the ground battling the blaze, and air support, including tankers and helicopters, have been deployed to the fire, Helmerick said.

The interstate was closed at 2 p.m., and the Colorado Department of Transportation had no estimate on when it would reopen.

The eastbound lanes of the highway were closed at Exit 116 at Glenwood Springs and the westbound lanes were shut down at Exit 133 in Dotsero.

CDOT cameras showed heavy smoke along the highway through the canyon.
