An emergency rescue descended into farce when firefighters discovered the woman they were attempting to save was in fact a lifeless mannequin.
The Santa Barbara County Fire Department was called to California’s Hope Ranch Beach with reports of a woman clinging to the side of a cliff.
The woman seen donning a red attire with dishevelled long-flowing hair was dangling off the cliff overlooking the beach, without any proper climbing gear.
Firefighters deployed a full team with equipment and arrived with trucks, utility vehicles and even drones.
But the would-be rescuers soon discovered that the "woman" was actually a mannequin, left behind after a movie shoot days earlier.
Daniel Bertucelli, a spokesperson of the department recounted the incident and also shared an image that showed no body heat coming from the ‘person.'
Despite the unnecessary efforts involved, the agency tweeted that the witnesses did the right thing by calling 911, adding its "better to call than not.”
Social media users found humour in the strange incident, with many posting hilarious comments about the viral story. This is not the first time that emergency responders have been faced with such events.
‘Hero’ dad drowns while saving son after kayak overturns on lake as wife praises bravery
Earlier this year in June, emergency services in the city of Hachinohe in north-eastern Japan were shocked, knowing that the drowning woman they rescued turned to be a life-size sex doll.
The rescuers and police had arrived at the river with an ambulance and multiple fire and rescue brigades to save the ‘woman’ while a crowd was watching.
In the end, they managed to fish the figure out of the water, only to realise what it actually was.
