A 10-year-old girl is in critical condition in hospital after a woman tried to shoot a dog and missed.
The suspect, 34-year-old Kimberly Renee Luter, was reportedly trying to shoot the animal outside her house in Mississippi when a stray bullet passed through a wall and struck the child.
The girl was taken to hospital by air ambulance as Marion County deputies swarmed to the scene.
A search warrant was immediately issued and officers searching Luter’s home turned up a quantity of marijuana along with weighing and packaging materials.
Luter and her boyfriend, 29-year-old Rkeen Antwuan Daniels, have both been arrested.
Luter is charged with aggravated assault while Daniels is charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute.
Chief Deputy Jamie Singley, with the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, said in a news release that 34-year-old Kimberly Renee Luter was trying to shoot at a dog.
“While firing at the dog, projectiles entered the residence, striking a 10-year-old female juvenile,” Singley said.
The incident happened around 4.51pm Thursday at an address on Franklin Drive in Columbia, according to the report from the Marion County Sheriff’s Office.
The Sheriff’s Office added that an investigation into the incident is ongoing.
Accidental shootings are depressingly commonplace in the US. In November, a man was shot by his own dog after the pup's paw became stuck in his pistol's trigger.
Texas police officer David Tilley told reporters at the time: "Fortunately, it was just a through and through shot — it didn’t hit a main artery or anything.
"He took himself to the hospital and he’s fine."
He added: "If you have a License to Carry, we ask for your safety and the safety of others, be responsible."
In Colorado, a dog walker was shot dead after he allegedly fired 24 shots after a row over poo.
