Google Maps users baffled by mystery markings and black mass in Chinese desert

Google Maps users have been stumped by strange markings that have been spotted in the Chinese desert.

One Reddit subscriber uploaded a picture of what looks like the etching of a bird with a large black mass in the middle of it. It was spotted in Xinjiang, north-west China.

The apparent etching is surrounded by what looks like like tyre tracks.

The uploaded posted: "There's a lot of weird stuff over there.

"The tire tracks go by that thing then up to the mountain or something where it looks like it's leaking some stuff or something and it's covering some parts of the highway up behind the mountains, and it looks new.

"Also weird purple or red on the mountain, and the tire tracks go up there. Also weird grid type patterns to the left of the thing in the picture if you follow the tire track that direction."

Other Reddit detectives tried to come up with their own theories for what it could be.

One suggested it looked like the "Nazca Lines hummingbird." That is in reference to the famous geoglyphs made in the Nazca Desert in Peru up to 2,500 years ago.

But another user was certain it is not a geoglyph. Another internet sleuth seemed to think that the dark marking is a "small body of water," while the marking could be a "sand sculpture of a bird".

Others thought it could be a quarry or mine, while others agree that it looks like a Nazca Lines etching.

One added: "It reminds me of a symbol for the Persian empire."

Google Maps fans are often quick to solve mysteries the site throws up, but they struggled to reach agreement on this one.

Recently internet sleuths thought they had uncovered the mystery of a plane abandoned in the Libyan desert.
