Prince Harry has a "deep-seated insecurity about irrelevance" given that the "spotlight" is on his brother Prince William, according to an expert.

In his newly-released book Courtiers: the Hidden Power Behind the Crown, royal author Valentine Low writes that Harry feared he had a "shell life" which would expire when Prince George turns 18.

Low quotes a source as saying: "He [Harry] would say, ‘I have this time to make this impact. Because I can.’ Until George turns 18, was the way he was thinking about it. ‘Then I will be the also-ran.’"

Brand expert Eric Schiffer – chairman of Reputation Management Consultants – reckons Harry's insecurities are "understandable" given he knows how royal life works.

However, Schiffer added the Duke of Sussex was "different" in that he has caused "combustion" within the Firm.

Schiffer told the Daily Star: "I think Harry has a deep-seated insecurity about irrelevance.

"That's understandable given that he's second in line, and he understands how the system works and where the spotlight is going to go – which will be focused on his brother.

"At the same time, what Harry has done is different than most and has also created a lot of combustion among the family."

Explaining how this "different" Harry has caused friction in the family, Schiffer said he had "reinvented" himself as a man of the modern world.

He continued: "[Harry is] a strong steward of the values that young men and women of the world care about, and joined with Meghan in being fierce advocates on their behalf.

"That, in part, has a negative impact on the monarchy, because that’s been their core mission."

Since quitting the Royal Family in early 2020 and jetting off Stateside, Harry and Meghan Markle have been vocal about a number of causes close to their hearts.

These have included racial equality, the Ukraine invasion, climate change and urging voters to "reject hate speech, misinformation and online negativity" ahead of the 2020 US election – a move that some considered to be a breach of royal protocol.
