Inside Queen and Meghans close relationship – dog sitting and sleepovers

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry may now have some tensions with the Royal Family – but at one point in time the Duchess of Sussex and the Queen shared some very close moments.

From the moment Meghan and Harry got engaged, Her Majesty made attempts to get to know the former Suits actress, going as far at to make special exceptions that even Kate Middleton never had.

The Duchess of Sussex also confirmed herself during her sit-down interview with Oprah Winfrey that the Queen had always been “wonderful” to her.

Meghan and the Queen shared breakfast together, had a sleepover on an overnight train and Her Majesty presented Meghan with pearl earrings on their first joint tour together in 2018.

Getting under the blanket

The two had embarked on a royal trip to Cheshire and from the photos taken on that day, Meghan and the Queen seemed delighted to be in each other's company as they shared a few giggles together.

There was also one moment on the trip that showed the Queen’s feelings towards Meghan when she offered to share her blanket with her as they returned to the car.

Meghan later told Oprah that the moment “made me think of my grandmother.”

During her appearances on the iconic balcony, Meghan was given central spots close to the Queen with the 2018 event highlighting Her Majesty and the Duchess' connection as they happily chatting away.

A royal source said Meghan and the Queen’s bond grew through their sense of humour.

Speaking to Us Weekly, the source said: “She has a brilliant sense of humour. That’s one of the first things that brought her and Meghan closer.

“It’s that warm side of her that has made Meghan feel so at ease.”

For the love of dogs

The Queen and Meghan both have a soft spot for a canine companion with Her Majesty’s famous corgis and the Duchess’ two dogs, Guy and Pula.

Her Majesty was actually on dog sitting duty the day before Meghan and Harry’s wedding after a photograph spotted rescue dog Guy riding with the Queen.

Harry even commented about how good Meghan has been with the Queen’s corgis.

In their first interview as a couple, the Duke said: “For 33 years, [I’ve been] barked at, and this one walks in, and absolutely nothing, just wagging tails.”

On their first meeting, the corgis just sat quietly on Meghan’s feet with the Duchess saying the moment "was very sweet".

Meghan and Harry are expected to return at some point this year for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee celebrations but a row over security has thrown doubt on the trip.

The trip would mark the first occasion that the Queen has seen Meghan and Harry’s latest arrival, Lilibet, face to face.
