Royal Ascot, once an exclusive race meeting for the upper crust, has become notorious for all-day drinking, wild antics – and even furtive sex between tipsy racegoers.
Scenes from the end of Ladies’ Day yesterday showed many tipsy racegoers, very much the worse for wear, abandoning high heels and top hats as they staggered home from the Berkshire course.
Many others, unable to face the walk, were seen resting on any available surface, even sprawling in flower beds as the combination of warm weather and cold drinks brought them to a complete stop.

A 2019 survey showed that that 14% of Ascot racegoers claimed to have seen drugs being taken at the course, and the same survey found that Ascot had by far the friskiest punters, with around 10% reporting seeing others engaging in sexual activity during races.
Nick Smith, the track’s director of media and communications, commented on one notorious Day Four brawl: “There will always be some incidents in crowds of circa 70,000.
“We stepped up our security considerably last year and have maintained that, with many more highly visible stewards.
“In the rare event of incidences of antisocial behaviour, our reports indicate they were dealt with satisfactorily.”
