Macron might regret grand strategic plans as he rolls red carpet for Modi

Boris Johnson is grilled on India and Modi’s stance on Russia

India’s position as the guest of honour at the Bastille Day parade aims to solidify the growing partnership between India and France, as President Emmanuel Macron seeks to strengthen political and diplomatic ties.

The rise of India as a global power has prompted Macron’s efforts to forge stronger relations between the two nations.

However, debates and uncertainties surround this strategic alliance between the two countries, influenced by various factors that may unfold in the future, according to one expert.

Speaking to Express.co.uk, Dr Helena Ivanov, Research Fellow at the Henri Jackson Society, commented on the significance of Macron hosting Prime Minister Narendra Modi, stating: “I don’t think we should be surprised that Macron hosted Modi and that he’s trying to strengthen political and diplomatic ties between France and India.

“India is a rising power on the global stage, and we can expect it to become a bigger player in the coming years – so it is quite reasonable for Macron to try and improve relations between the two countries.”

The growing stature of India necessitates deeper engagement with key global players.

But the course this strategic relationship will take remains uncertain, as Dr Ivanov warned. She said: “Of course, how this plays out in practice and whether Macron might come to regret it is yet to be seen and depends on many currently unpredictable factors.”

While the intentions behind the partnership are clear, its practical implementation and potential consequences are subject to evolving circumstances.

The invitation extended to Modi by Macron has not been without criticism, particularly considering Modi’s political stance. Dr Ivanov added: “Criticism against Macron’s invitation to Modi is not a surprise, especially given Modi’s political standpoints.

“But also, this isn’t new for Macron either – who already received a fair share of criticism for certain comments he made about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and his relationship with China.”
