A man was fatally shot Sunday afternoon by a police officer following an alleged shoplifting incident, according to tweets from Colorado Springs police.
At 3:50 p.m., an officer who was working “extra duty” at the Walmart at 3201 E. Platte Ave. attempted to stop a man who had allegedly shoplifted from the store. The man refused to stop and ran through the parking lot and down Pine Tree Square to Chelton Road where he hid behind a car.
The officer found him and “gave commands, which the suspect ignored.” The officer fired their Taser at the man, who in turn pulled out a gun and shot at least one round.
The officer would fire at least one round from their duty handgun, which struck the man. According to Colorado Springs police, officers “performed life saving measures until a medical team arrived.” The man would later die at a local hospital.
The identity of the man and the police officer have not been released.
The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office is in charge of the investigation in this shooting. Any with information is asked to call 719-520-6666.
