Man ‘kills his two kids on Christmas Day hours after wife committed suicide’

A man killed his two young children on Christmas Day after his wife was found dead in the Philippines, it has been alleged.

Aiko Siancunco, 29, reportedly admitted to strangling his daughter Akira, three, and son Kion, one, after his spouse committed suicide.

Taguig City Police Chief Col. Celso Rodriguez said he faced parricide charges over the alleged killings on Christmas Day morning.

He claimed Siancunco admitted to strangling his children at their home after his wife Karina committed suicide on the afternoon of December 24.

Siancunco was arrested when he reportedly showed up at a police station in a blood-stained white shirt after trying to take his own life.

He is now being investigated over the death of his wife, whose family deny killed herself.

Officers rushed to the home and found his room in disarray and his children's bodies lying on a mattress at about 7.30am.

In radio interviews, Rodriguez claimed Siacunco’s call centre agent wife, 28, hung herself on Thursday, a claim that her family denied.

The couple had been arguing over his failure to find a job since the government imposed a lockdown in March, police said.

News website philstar.com wrote: "The tragedy that befell the Siacuncos is an extreme manifestation of the mental distress that health professionals say has been on the rise as a result of the difficulties arising from the COVID-19 pandemic.

"For household breadwinners in particular, the loss of jobs or sources of livelihood can be deeply stressful and can put a strain on family relationships."
