Meghan Markle ‘could become princess’ if Queen decides to strip royal titles

Any attempt to strip Prince Harry and Meghan Markle of their royal titles could “backfire” and benefit the couple, a commentator has claimed.

Since their departure from the firm in 2020, some have repeatedly called for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to lose their titles.

Earlier this year, the Queen announced that Meghan and Harry would not be returning as working royals – removing a series of patronages in the process.

However, any further moves by Her Majesty could actually strengthen the departed couple, according to royal expert Daniela Elser.

She wrote in news.com.au: “The Sussexes…could bask in a sort of PR martyrdom that would strengthen their anti-Establishment, ‘speaking truth to power’ brand."

She added: "Even if Harry and Meghan were no longer in a position to use their Sussex titles, they still have his princely status to fall back on.

“He will always be Prince Henry of Wales officially and she, as his wife, has every right to style herself Princess Henry of Wales, a la the Queen’s cousin Prince Michael of Kent and his wife Princess Michael of Kent.”

"Therefore, should Harry and Meghan find themselves sans their gifted titles then, no biggie, they can simply go down the Wales route."

In this scenario, Meghan could end up with an “even more elevated title than duchess”.

After moving to the US, Meghan and Harry landed landmark deals with Spotify and Netflix.

Since their bombshell with Oprah Winfrey, Harry has also made a series of other allegations about growing up in the Royal Family.

Last month, royal expertLady Colin Campbellsaid he was “too big” for his royal title.

She launched a petition urging The Duke of Sussex to request that the Queen put his titles into abeyance – meaning they would go into a state of temporary disuse or suspension.

More than 40,000 people have since signed the Change.org petition.

Lady C told the Daily Star: “I started it because I think it’s the right thing to do.

"I have spoken to people, many people, who think it’s the right thing to do and it is the solution.

"It is a dignified solution for all concerned. To humiliate no-one and protect everyone. I think it’s a humane way of solving a very regrettable situation."

She believes Harry and Meghan would still be able to "sell their brand" without the royal titles.

Lady C added: "It is the best solution because it frees Harry to be able to indulge himself without consequence and without doing damage to the institution of the monarchy of the British nation, the British people and himself.”
