Mother accused of leaving girl, 1, starved to death for days to visit boyfriend

A 37-year-old Italian woman has been accused of leaving her daughter alone for more than six days, who in her absence passed away.

Alessia Pifferi was arrested on charges of voluntary homicide aggravated by futile motives and premeditation after her daughter Diana died aged one and a half.

Pifferi is suspected of abandoning the girl at her home in Milan to go and stay with her partner in Bergamo.

Diana's body was discovered on Wednesday morning, with Italian news sources reporting that Pifferi has since confessed to leaving the girl.

In words translated from Italian by local news sources, she said "I was unaware of everything" and reportedly claimed she was a good mother despite the death.

She said: “I was counting on the possibility of having a future with my partner, and that's exactly what I was trying to understand in those days. This is why I considered it crucial not to interrupt those days when I was with him, even when I was afraid that the child could be very ill or die".

It is understood she initially told her partner that Diana was at the seaside with her sister.

According to translations from Spark Chronicles, Pifferi said: “When I left my daughter alone at home I was not calm because I knew I was doing something that should not be done. I was not calm because anything could happen, both in terms of food and other things. I also worried that she had to be clean and that anything could happen."

The prosecutor in the case, Francesco De Tommasi, said that Pifferi was "dangerous" who was “capable of committing atrocities”.

PledgeTimesreports that neighbours didn’t hear a single cry from the little girl.

She is believed to have been left with a single bottle of milk, while an open bottle of anxiolytic was found in the flat.

There has been no comment from the family of Pifferi at the time of writing.

It is understood that, following her arrest, Pifferi initially told authorities that she had left the girl with a babysitter and then her mother, however later changed her story in custody. No evidence was found that a babysitter had been present.

In a statement, police said: “Following the discovery yesterday of the corpse of a 16-month-old girl in a private house in the Mecenate area, in Milan, during the night just passed, having emerged elements of presumed responsibility against the mother, an Italian with a clean record born in 1985, has carried out against him the measure of the arrest of a suspect of crime issued by the Public Prosecutor on duty for the crime of multiple murder.

"The agents of the Flying Squad, at the time of the inspection carried out with the specialists of the Regional Cabinet of the Scientific Police found some inconsistencies that allowed the Public Prosecutor to proceed to interrogation, collecting statements about a repeated state of abandonment of the child determined by the conduct of the mother “.

Pifferi is understood to remain in custody while investigations continue.
