Thousands of people living in the vicinity of Mount Nyiragongo left their homes as the night sky an eerie shade of red. In 2002, after its last eruption, 250 people were killed and 120,000 left homeless.
It is located in Goma, the capital of North Kivu province, and is one of the world’s most active volcanoes.
Nyiragongo is also considered among the most dangerous.
