A mother is dead and her one-year-old daughter is in critical condition after their vehicle collided with a school minibus on the Long Island Expressway in New York.
The woman, who was reportedly her thirties, was pronounced dead on the scene. Her baby, who was travelling in a car seat in the back, was rushed to the hospital with critical injuries.
A witness said: "A horrific crash involving a mini school bus and Nissan here in Yaphank…a mother in her thirties is dead…her one year old baby clinging to life"

The bus rolled over onto its side and images from traffic cameras in the area showed both vehicles on a grass verge close to the intersection.
"When the officer arrived on the scene, the baby was pulled out of the vehicle by a pedestrian,” Suffolk County Chief of Police Rodney Harrison told reporters, adding that the officer had performed CPR, before paramedics arrived to take the injured child to Stony Brook University Hospital.
Police said the 73-year-old school van driver and his 61-year-old female assistant were being treated for broken bones and what police described as “non-life-threatening injuries.”
There were no students on board at the time of the incident, police said.

"This is an unfortunate situation. We're going to ask for everybody to keep their prayers out for the family. Hopefully the baby recovers from the injuries that she received in the vehicle collision," Harrison said.
Local Avion Gordon tweeted: "The most horrific accident I ever witnessed in my life".
Police said the crash occurred when the woman’s vehicle, travelling north on County Route 101, collided with the minibus, which was headed east on Express Drive South at 7:35 a.m.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
