Mum who had leg amputated after stepping on rusty nail in Walmart handed $10m

A woman who had her leg amputated after stepping on a rusty nail in Walmart has been awarded $10 million following the catastrophic reaction.

April Jones, from South Carolina, was left wheelchair-bound after suffering injuries from a corroded nail while shopping in the main aisle in one of their stores.

She sued the supermarket after her life changed forever following the incident which took place in 2015, a court heard last week.

The mum was left with a major infection which got so bad that she had to undergo several surgeries and eventually had to get her leg amputated above her knee as a result.

Before this, Jones had to endure the pain of her second toe on her right foot being removed and then had to have three more amputated, reports New York Post.

Her lawyers said she has been in a wheelchair for the last six years and has been forced to rely on her adult children to help her.

The mum said she is going to use the money to go towards a much-needed prosthetic as well as to make her home more wheelchair friendly and to cover medical fees.

Roy Willey, one of Jones attorneys, said: “The jury sent a message to Walmart that if you come into Florence County and injure one of their own, they will make sure that person is taken care [ of ].

“We are forever grateful.”
