A pilot is in hospital with several injuries after a plane crashed into a block of flats in Oxfordshire on Saturday lunchtime.

The plane is said to have crashed into a block of flats at 12pm on April 2 but the building was empty and no one else suffered any injuries, Thames Valley Police said.

The force's statement said: "The light aircraft crashed into an unoccupied block of flats near Camp Road in Upper Heyford at about midday today.

"The pilot has suffered several injuries and has been taken to hospital. No-one else has been injured as a result of the incident.

"Thames Valley Police has put a small cordon in place at the scene, however at this time no local residents need to be evacuated."

The pilot managed to eject from the plane before it crashed into the building, police say.

Although the village is home to an RAF base, it is not thought a military plane is involved, reports the BBC.

A local who claims to have seen the incident described it on social media as "absolutely terrifying".

Another, named Tisa Kilby, 55, said she was out walking her dogs when she saw the incident.

"I looked up and literally saw this guy leap out of this plane and thought, that's an odd place to be parachuting," she said.

"Within four or five seconds the plane nose-dived and crashed into the block of flats."

The woman claims that authorities told her the pilot had 'suffered life-altering injuries' – but this is yet to be confirmed.

South Central Ambulance Service said the pilot was an "older gentleman" who was treated at the scene before being taken to the hospital.

Police have urged anyone with any footage or information to contact them by calling 101, quoting reference 857.
