Prince Andrew was “in tears” after being stripped of his military titles and royal patronages, royal insiders have claimed.
The Duke of York, who can no longer use the title HRH in an official capacity, is said to be “utterly devastated”.
The decision was made less than 24 hours after it emerged Andrew will face a civil trial over allegations he had sex with Virginia Giuffre when she was 17 – a claim he has repeatedly denied.
The Duke, 61, was given the news by the Queen after she reportedly consulted Princes Charles and William.
A source said: “The Prince is utterly devastated. He was tearful when told the news, even though he expected it.
“Andrew feels that he has let so many people down, not least his mother the Queen in her Platinum Jubilee year.
“He hoped he might be allowed to clear his name [first]. There’s a large number of people in the Royal household convinced he’s innocent. But the clamour for his scalp meant a quick, brutal decision needed to be made.”
Senior defence sources said the removal of his military titles was met with “a huge sigh of relief”.
Though it has emerged his ex-wife Sarah Ferguson will continue to use “Duchess of York”.
And it was last night claimed Andrew’s lawyers want to question a psychologist who treated Ms Giuffre, claiming she may “suffer from false memories”.
