When Prince Harry and Meghan Markle stepped back from royal duties much was made of the strain on the relationship with the Queen.
But, according to a new biography, it was actually Harry's once-close relationship with his grandfather, Prince Philip, that took a big blow.
Royal expert Ingrid Seward, author of Prince Philip Revealed, said that the Queen’s husband was unable to comprehend why Harry wanted to leave the Firm.
According to Seward, the Duke of Edinburgh has now “walked away” from the situation and feels his advice “fell on deaf ears”.
In what is the first widespread biography of Philip in over 30-years, Seward claims Philip had doubts over Meghan ahead of the Royal Wedding in 2018.
As reported in Vanity Fair, Seward wrote: “For Philip, whose entire existence has been based on a devotion to doing his duty, it appeared that his grandson had abdicated his for the sake of his marriage to an American divorcee in much the same way as Edward VIII gave up his crown to marry Wallis Simpson in 1936.”
According to the biographer, Philip could not understand why his grandson wanted to leave the royal family.

He was also “dismayed” by their treatment of the Queen, with them reportedly making the announcement before consulting Her Majesty.
According to Seward’s book: “The Queen was informed ten minutes before the announcement went live on the website Sussex Royal. She was not amused. As Philip was in residence, he was also aware of the announcement and its implications.”
Speaking to Vanity Fair, Seward added: “Philip simply cannot understand how Harry has behaved the way he has done. His grandson’s behavior is completely alien to him so not unnaturally the relationship has suffered.”
Harry and Meghan shocked the world when they spectacularly quit the Royal Family to pursue a life of independence.
The couple announced in January this year that they would step back from their positions in the Royal Family following talks at Sandringham between Harry, Prince Charles, Prince William and the Queen.
Meghan and Harry have since relocated with their son Archie to California, having spent the intervening period living in Canada.
