Revellers trapped inside pub for three days compare it to Im a Celebrity

The first revellers freed after being trapped by snowy conditions at Britain's highest pub have compared the three-day ordeal to I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here.

Pub goers were enjoying the Oasis Tribute band at the Tann Hill Inn in the Yorkshire Dales when conditions began to get worse and caused them to be trapped over the weekend.

Although they were not subjected to any gruelling trials, Becky Longthorp, 36 and Gary Bimpson, 42, said their only concern was if they ran the place dry.

Becky said: “To be honest, I think the main worry was if the beer ran out really.

“We just sit on random tables with whoever – it’s like we all just know each other now.

“It’s like 'I’m a celebrity', but at the Tan Hill Inn pub.”

The pair, who had planned on camping near the pub, were among 61 people that have been forced to sleep on the floors since becoming trapped on Friday night.

The pub, which is situated 1,732ft (528m) above sea level, left people stranded after storm Arwen brought down power cable lines on roads, as well as 3ft of snow.

The couple from Hull, East Yorkshire, said they arrived at the Tan Hill Inn on Friday to see an Oasis cover band and had pitched their tents by the early afternoon following their campervan breaking down the other week.

Becky, sports masseuse, realised that their accommodation was not going to be viable after checking just after the Oasis gig to find the tent “ripped to shred”.

Gary said: “You couldn’t see it – it was just like arctic conditions in a blizzard.

“At 2 am in the morning, we were trying to dig all the stuff out.

“It was absolutely crazy. We’ve been camping on the floor in the Tan Hill ever since then.”

While admitting to some “anxiety” during the following three days, the couple said they’ve also been embracing their unique situation.

Gary added: “We had a bit of a sing-along, and everybody got their guitars out last night, which has been a good bit of fun.

“It’s just been a good atmosphere really – good old British spirit and all that.”

Becky said some people were going out to make the most of the snow by making snowman but most trapped punters have been playing “drinking games”.

The couple were finally able to leave today and said the owners of the pub “deserve a bloody medal.”

Fellow reveller Vicky Hogson posted to Facebook: "After the highs of being told we were going to be rescued yesterday morning… then the lows of being told .. nope, rescue ain’t happening we actually had a really good night last night.

"We had a delicious Sunday dinner with the biggest Yorkshire puddings I’ve ever seen, we were entertained by some impromptu acoustic singers.

"The gritters have finally made it up to us so we have attempted to drive home… we’ve already had to help push a van out a ditch so this could well be another adventure."
