A British holidaymaker has burned alive in Turkey after she was trapped inside a caravan with her boyfriend as it caught fire.

Hayley Louise Pearce, 54, was staying in the caravan with her boyfriend in the Turkish port city of Bodrum, which is famous for its castle which is one of the main attractions on the peninsula.

The couple apparently woke up after the blaze started, but were unable to get to the door and open it. As a result, Hayley remained trapped in the trailer and died in the early hours of May 11.

Her Turkish boyfriend, who has not been named, was reportedly also injured in the blaze but somehow managed to escape the flames.

When firemen turned up a short while later, they could only recover Hayley's lifeless body.

It has been taken to the morgue of the Mugla Forensic Medicine Institute for an autopsy.

Bodrum is a popular tourist destination with Brits with lots of local bazaars save additional leather goods which are particularly popular in the region. It also has a lot of yachts and marinas and there are also a lot of hiking trails in the area.

According to local media, the cause of the fire was probably an electric heater, but the official investigation into the tragedy is ongoing.

Caravan fires are nine times more dangerous than house fires, according to figures from Caravan Times.

They are more likely to lead to death or serious injury due to the manually fitted gas supply, close quarters and the lightweight materials used to build the walls, which are far more flammable than bricks and mortar.
