Vigilantes lynch drug cartel assassin from tree during Mexicos World Cup match

Vigilantes lynched a drug cartel hitman from a tree after a former local politician was murdered while watching the World Cup.

Residents of Azucena, a neighbourhood in the Mexican state of Tabasco, said that two armed men rushed into the home of the official, identified only as Armando N, and shot him several times as he watched Mexico play Saudi Arabia in their final group game on Wednesday (November 30).

He was later helped to a hospital by his neighbours but sadly died.

Having heard the gunfire, locals immediately launched a search of the neighbourhood, hunting for the cartel assassins.

They blocked exits in and out of the area and eventually got their hands on one of the men, according to El Tiempo.

Gruesome videos have emerged of the vigilantes taking justice into their own hands, tying the man's hands behind his back and placing a rope around his neck before lynching him from a tree.

The footage shows a large crowd gathered around the tree as three men set up the rope and yank it downward, pulling the cartel hitmen off the floor and seemingly breaking his neck.

Cheers, whoops and whistles can be heard as his lifeless body swings from the rope.

Before he was killed, the hitman confessed that he had been paid 10,000 pesos (£425) to carry out the murder. He claimed someone named Juan N was responsible for the plan.

It later transpired that the hitman was from the neighbouring state of Chiapas, although it is not yet clear which cartel he was affiliated with.

Authorities are thus far yet to release a statement regarding the incident. However, footage did show that armed police had arrived at the scene.
