Saturday marks 20 years since the most deadly terrorist attack in history.
Almost 3,000 people were killed in a series of coordinated attack by militant Islamists al-Qaeda on September 11, 2001.
A plane was flown into each tower of the World Trade Center in New York, another crashed into the Pentagon in Arlington County, Virginia, while a fourth crashed in a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
The latter was the only plane not to hit its intended target after the heroic passengers on Flight 93 managed to overpower the hijackers.
Al-Qaeda quickly claimed responsibility for the attacks that shocked the world with Osama bin Laden the apparent mastermind.
But despite this there have still been a string of absurd conspiracy theories spread in the past two decades. The Daily Star looks at some of them.
No planes theory
The theory that no planes were used in the 9/11 terror attacks is one of the strangest put forward.
An employee of the Bush administration, Morgan Reynolds, claimed it is physically impossible that the Boeing planes of Flights 11 and 175 could have penetrated the steel frames of the Twin Towers.
He reckons digital compositing was used to depict the plane crashes in both news reports and subsequent amateur video footage.
Reynolds said: "There were no planes, there were no hijackers. I know, I know, I'm out of the mainstream, but that's the way it is."
Former MI5 officers and whistleblower David Shayler added that "the only explanation is that they were missiles surrounded by holograms made to look like planes".
Other conspiracy theorists have even refuted the no planes theory and discussion of it has even banned banned from some conspiracy theory websites.

New World Order
Some people think that 9/11 happened to bring about a New World Order in global politics.
Those who believe the outlandish theory think the shocking terror attack was initiated by a disparate variety of banking, corporate, globalisation and military interests for the purpose of creature a global totalitarian government.
The New World Order conspiracy theory predates the 9/11 terror attacks and became popular among anti-government extremists from the early 1990s.

US intelligence agencies let the attack happen
There are some conspiracy theorists who believe the inaction of US government officials was to allow the attacks to be carried out successfully.
Michael Meacher, former UK Environment Minister, claims the United States knowingly failed to prevent the attacks.
One claim is that the North American Aerospace Defense Command issued a stand down order or deliberately scrambled fighters late to allow the hijacked planes to reach their targets without interference.
It is suggested the US government allowed the terror attack to happen to kickstart the 'war on terror' but there has never been any prove to substantiate that.

Planes packed with explosive
One theory claims passengers on board were killed elsewhere and dumped at sea and that planes were packed with explosives and flown remotely into their targets.
Theorists also believe the hundreds of people on board the planes were part of the conspiracy and are now in hiding with new identities.
They also allege the recorded mobile phone calls the victims made to loved ones from the planes were impossible because the altitude of the planes was too high and faked using “voice morphing technology”.
The calls made by passengers on board Flight 93, who overpowered the hijackers, have since become famous.
But this theory also falls apart because phone records prove the calls were made from satellite phones fitted to the back of the aircraft seats.

Twin Towers deliberately demolished
Some people insist that video footage shows the towers falling in a controlled explosion before being hit by the planes.
Conspiracy theorists say this is proved by explosions at the windows as the towers fell from the top downwards.
An academic claims to have tested samples from the wrecked towers suggesting that explosives had been used.
But in a controlled explosion, buildings are destroyed from bottom to top and not the other way around. Experts say the debris and office equipment flying towards the windows after the floor collapsed was why the windows blew out.
It is also very unlikely that planting enough explosives the length of the buildings would not have been spotted by office workers.
