A woman was left laughing when a rat climbed up the drain in her New York City apartment and sat in her toilet bowl.
In the clip, shared on TikTok by @whatisnewyorkofficial, the woman watches the shivering rat sit in the toilet water and wash his face with his paws.
"Sir?" she asks the rat while giggling.
A man in the background jokes: "What a distinguished gentleman."
The rodent appears frightened and continues to sit in the water and looks as if it might be trapped.
Since it was uploaded on Tuesday (November 2) the video has been watched more than 2 million times and racked up thousands of likes and comments.
One viewer confessed: "My biggest fear is something biting my roast beef while I'm sitting on the toilet now I gotta start levitating."
A second viewer said: "Live-action Flushed Away?"
Someone else commented: "Adopt him now and call him Turd."
"He's huffing and puffing like y'all not gonna believe the night I just had," another person.
Rats are known to climb up through drainpipes and even through toilet u bends because they are good swimmers and able to navigate the sewage systems.
It's possible to get "no return" covers put in your drains to stop rats coming through as well as raw sewage being pushed back up in the case of flooding.
Rats are also very adept at getting through tiny gaps only as wide as their heads because they have "hinged" ribs that collapse when they wriggle through a small space.
This comes after a street was "swarming with rats" when a branch of Subway dumped bread into overflowing bins outside.
An anonymous worker said: "This happens every week, I walk past it on my break and no wonder there's so many rats! I work very close to this, and we have named the road 'rat ginnel' due to that amount of dead rats we see during out lunch break."
