Woman with 12 kids and 100 grandchildren beats Covid – at incredible age of 120

A grandmother has fought off coronavirus – at the almost unbelievable age of 120.

Local media reports that Menica Encu, who lives in the village of Ortabag in Uludere, a region of the southeastern Turkish province of Sirnak, was treated at the Sirnak Maternity and Children's Hospital after testing positive for the virus.

The mother of 12 – who reportedly has more than 100 grandchildren – was hospitalised for just over two weeks, but was eventually discharged with a clean bill of health.

Menica thanked the children’s hospital, which had been adapted into a makeshift Covid-19 facility in order to cope with the crisis.

She told local news source Anadolu Agency: “They took excellent care of me here. Thanks to their efforts, I got well.”

Halime Encu, 65, said: “My mother-in-law usually only eats organic products. She recovered after receiving very good medical attention. God bless the doctors and nurses who looked after her.”

Pulmonologist Dr. Bilim Kehya Akcan said that the 120-year-old patient responded well to the treatment and was discharged.

The doctor added that Menica needs to continue looking after her health during the coming weeks, as she is still weak, but the hospital team believe that she is well enough to be let home into the care of her family.

While 120 is an impressive age, Menica has not been verified by independent experts as having been born in 1900. She may have to stick to the healthy diet a little while longer if she’s to secure the world record.

Jeanne Calment, who died in 1997, is thought to be the longest-living person ever. She was 122 years and 164 days old when she died in 1997 – meaning she was born in 1875; before cars, aeroplanes or even the telephone.

A Japanese woman, Kane Tanaka, is currently considered by leading authorities to be the oldest person still living. Born in 1903, she’s coming up to her 118th birthday in January next year.
