Lord Frost warned Britain is in danger of “losing” Brexit as he urged the Government to “defend” the UK’s exit from the EU.

The former Brexit minister said that if Sir Keir Starmer takes power at the next general election he would “agree unequal deals to make us an EU rule-taker in return for the nebulous benefits of greater co-operation”.

But the Tory peer added that it is “not just Labour and the Lib Dems” who want to be “back in the EU tractor beam”.

He pointed to former Theresa May this week insisting her Brexit deal would have been better than Boris Johnson’s agreement.

Writing in his Telegraph column, Lord Frost said: “All too many people in all the parties think Britain’s destiny is to retrace our steps and get closer again to the EU.”

But he said the “defence” of Brexit was being left to a handful of Brexiteers on social media, with the Government largely silent.

The Conservative peer added: “The Brexit we have is forever associated with this party and this Government.

“We won an election with a mandate for it, and then delivered it, something all too rare nowadays.

“If voters start to doubt it, we will not escape punishment. So we must defend it. We must spell out the benefits. Or we will lose it.”

Lord Frost’s comments come as Rejoiners will take part in a pro-Brussels march in London next weekend.

Remainers seized upon a deal struck earlier this month to rejoin the EU’s Horizon science research programme as a sign the UK is moving closer to the bloc.

But former PM Mr Johnson last week dashed Rejoiner hopes as he insisted the UK will “never” return to the club in his Daily Mail column.
