Heatwaves have been easy to come by this September with two gloriously warm weekends – but there could be one more in store.

After a soggy summer, Brits were owed a little bit of good weather to see out the summer in style, and this September has certainly delivered that. Earlier this month, on Saturday, September 9, the UK bathed in the hottest day of the year with temperatures of 32.7C recorded at Heathrow Airport.

That was then followed by a second surprise bout the following weekend that delighted Brits who thought the good times were over and done with. Now it seems there could again be a little magic in the tail, with whispers of more warm weather still on the horizon this month.

Speaking before last weekend’s surprise bout of warmth, James Madden, forecaster for Exacta Weather, said: “Even later in the month there is the potential for high pressure to build and bath the country in further wall-to-wall sunshine and balmy temperatures.

“This could also see some more September temperature records fall by the end of the month.”

However, this is by no means a guarantee and, at the time of writing, forecasting from the Met Office looks rather different. Yellow weather warnings are in place today, Tuesday, September 19 for parts of Wales and northwest England. Further warnings also remain for Wednesday, September 20 for the same areas.

While wet and unsettled showers do appear to be on the horizon over the next few days, the Met Office has given hope to the possibility of a good end to the month. In its long-range forecast for September 23 to October 2 parts of England, including the southeast, could hope for warmer spells – although this could well be broken up due to low-pressure systems to the west and northwest of the UK.

The Met Office said: “The start of the period is likely to see mainly fine and dry weather with spells of sunshine. Some cloud and rain possibly spreading into western areas later on Saturday.

“On Sunday, perhaps turning more unsettled with rain or showers spreading from the west for many. However, expect the southeast to be drier. Conditions will likely be more unsettled into the following week as low-pressure systems lie to the west or northwest of the UK.

“This will bring showers or outbreaks of rain across many areas, with some heavy bursts at times, especially in the north and west. It will often be windy, with a small chance of a spell of very strong winds around the middle of the period. Temperatures are likely to remain near normal.”
